Pedobear Goes From Internet Meme to Safety Concern

| at 12:18 pm

PedobearInternet memes die hard. And for law enforcement in the southwest, Pedobear is the meme that just won’t go away. Authorities in New Mexico say the meme has been adopted by sexual predators targeting children – a claim being laughed off by blogs and Internet meme trackers who say Pedobear is a harmless joke.

Pedobear is a character made to mock pedophilia that first appeared on the Internet forum 4chan and subsequently spread throughout the Internet, according to Urlesque’s Meme Tracker. Pedobear’s image, a brown beady-eyed teddy bear is often photoshopped into otherwise harmless images online to add an element of implied inappropriateness for humor. Authorities aren’t laughing. | November 29, 2011 at 03:41 pm

A toxic, ubiquitous plague on our society, child sexual abuse, thrives in an environment of darkness and silence. The Penn State scandal has brought this crime out of the shadows, shocking our national conscience and proving that the malignancy only grows when individuals and institutions fail to confront allegations of abuse.

Every day, my colleagues and I see the pain that silence and other incredulously bad choices beget. Our work places us on the front lines of care for child victims of abuse. (more…)

No place for pedophilia in the world

Sad KidThere are a few hold overs of the 20th Century, which should have never seen the light of day in the 21st Century.

The N word is one, violence against women, or any other sector of society for that matter, is another.

A third is pedophilia, where adults – men and women – pray upon young girls and boys for their own twisted sexual gratification.

Unless you have shunned media – radio, television and newspaper – you now know about the allegations against former Penn State football defensive co-ordinator Jerry Sandusky who has been charged with eight counts of child sexual abuse. (more…)

| November 24, 2011 at 11:25 am

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania — A preliminary hearing on 40 charges of child sex abuse against former Penn State University assistant American football coach Jerry Sandusky was delayed to December 13 on Tuesday.

Sandusky, accused of sexually abusing eight boys over a 15-year period, had been due for a December 6 hearing but the court date was pushed back and moved to accommodate “logistical needs,” according to a website posting.

The hearing was moved to Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, so a judge from outside Harrisburg could hear the case to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest with the school or Sandusky’s charity, The Second Mile. (more…)
