Facebook photos lead to child abuse arrests in Arizona

FacebookPhoenix: Two Arizona parents were arrested by sheriff’s deputies after apparently posting pictures on Facebook that showed their children, an infant and a toddler, bound with duct tape, authorities said on Thursday.

Coconino County deputies arrested Frankie Almuina, 20, and Kayla Almuina, 19, on suspicion of two counts of child abuse on Wednesday at their northern Arizona home after being alerted to the photos by an anonymous tip. (more…)

US: Flag raised to honor child abuse victims

The Child Advocacy Center raised a flag today to honor two children who police say were killed by their caretakers. The flag serves as a reminder from those who serve on the front lines protecting Mid-South children.

A group of people gathered for Thursday’s short ceremony in the courtyard at the Child Advocacy Center. The flag was raised for 21-month-old Adrien Hickerson whose parents have been indicted on criminal charges for his death.

It was also raised for Anaya Jones whose uncle is charged with shaking her to death.Child advocates say raising a flag for each is important. (more…)

Lake Charles mother responds to child abuse allegations

child abuseLAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) – A Lake Charles mother accused of child abuse is speaking out. Crystal Ceasar was arrested and charged with cruelty to a juvenile. She’s now telling her side of the story.

“We got a report that your daughter was burnt by a flat iron and you hit her with a brush. I was like I would never do that to my child. I did admit that I burnt her with a flat iron but it was an accident,” said Ceasar.

Ceasar recalled it was November 2010 when she first met Calcasieu Sheriff’s Detective Kathy LeBlanc. According to the mother of five the case was closed after Child Protective Services found no evidence of abuse. (more…)

Child abuse charges, not attempted murder, for baby-dropping San Jose mom

The San Jose mother accused of tossing her toddler out a second-story window on Christmas will not face attempted murder charges, said prosecutors on Wednesday. Instead they filed serious child abuse charges and psychiatrists debated what could have caused her to endanger her son.

San Jose police initially arrested 24-year-old Lupita Cortez for trying to kill her 22-month-old toddler. But now prosecutors have decided to charge her with one felony count each of child abuse and child endangerment leading to serious injury. (more…)

“We don’t invest enough in the prevention or treatment of child abuse,” Dr. Yitzchak Kadman, Executive Director of the National Council for the Child told President Shimon Peres on Wednesday.

Kadman was at the President’s residence to present Peres with the first copy of the 2011 edition of the almanac on ‘Children in Israel’ which had been published for the twentieth consecutive year. (more…)

Lymm man sentenced at Warrington Crown Court

A LYMM man who as a youngster abused two girls aged five and seven will not go to prison. Warrington Crown Court heard last week how Daniel Campbell began abusing a seven-year-old girl in February 2003.

He was aged 11 at the time. The assaults by Campbell, aged 20, of Northway, continued until September 2004.

Prosecuting, Martin McRobb said that he would touch his victim in a sexual manner and ask her to do the same to him. (more…)

A dramatic rise in crimes against children is prompting Calgary police to bump up its child abuse unit.

The addition of seven investigators, nearly doubling the unit, is designed to help police deal with an increasing workload of disturbing cases of violence against youngsters. (more…)

Warrior words over ‘Maori child abuse’ label claim

Maori are a warrior race prone to violence, and an academic’s call to stop referring to Maori child abuse is whitewashing the problem instead of dealing with it, a prominent iwi leader says.

Ngapuhi leader David Rankin hit back at an Auckland academic’s claim the increasing use of the term “Maori child abuse” is fuelling racism.

Rankin said Maori are a “violent people” and the term accurately reflects what some Maori parents are doing to their children. (more…)

Lauren Book says that when she was sexually abused as a child by her family’s nanny — from the time she was 11 until 17 — she was too fearful to tell her parents and younger sister and brother.

Church of England orders child abuse inquiry

LONDON — Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has set up an inquiry in Chichester diocese in southern England, reportedly after allegations that paedophile priests were allowed to continue working despite being accused of sexual abuse.

The archbishop’s decision to investigate the diocese will throw the spotlight on abuse by clergy in the Church of England, raising an issue which has already rocked the Catholic Church in a number of countries.

A statement late on Thursday from the archbishop’s Lambeth Palace residence said the inquiry had been launched “in response to concerns within the diocese” but declined to expand on the background to the fears. (more…)
