Economy, increase in domestic violence said to be causes

Child-advocacy professionals say the down economy, increased reporting and connection to domestic violence are some causes of the uptick in incidents of child abuse in Dutchess County.

“In 2010, we served a record 605 children,” Kathleen Murphy, executive director of the Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse, told the Journal. “In 2011, it rose to 698 and we broke the record again. If we keep heading in this direction, we’ll break that record again in 2012.” (more…)

Sheriff calls child abuse case “horrific”

Child abuseLUGOFF, SC (WIS) – Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews says a child abuse case recently investigated by his department is “horrific.”

24-year-old Catharine Ammons and 27-year-old James Watson of Lugoff were arrested by deputies after hospital officials at Kershaw Health notified law enforcement of possible child abuse.

Over several months of abuse, Sheriff Matthews says hospital officials determined Ammons’ 4-year-old daughter suffered two broken arms and a broken leg. (more…)
