Cumberland County man charged with making child porn of girls he was baby-sitting

| November 20, 2010 at 04:11 pm

Joe Elias, The Patriot-News

A Hampden Township man has been indicted on federal charges of producing and distributing child pornography of local girls from Perry County and elsewhere, some of whom he was baby-sitting, officials said.

Mark Anthony Permenter, 32, of the 300 block of Belaire Drive, Lower Allen Township, was indicted Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Harrisburg.

Permenter had contact with an undercover postal inspector and sent him sample pictures and an investigation revealed that he had taken photographs of multiple girls under the age of 7 whom he had contact with or watched, records state.

An affidavit by a postal inspector states Permenter sent the digital pictures in June that depicted the girls engaged in sexual acts.

In October, Permenter sent one photo through the mail of a girl engaged in a sex act, records state.

Permenter is being held in the Perry County Prison, according to federal records.

Permenter’s address has been corrected from an earlier version.

The Case of the Pope: Vatican Accountability for Human Rights Abuses by Geoffrey Robertson

Terry Eagleton welcomes a coolly devastating inquiry into the Vatican’s handling of child abuse

Terry Eagleton

The Guardian,September 2010

Article history

The first child sex scandal in the Catholic church took place in AD153, long before there was a “gay culture” or Jewish journalists for bishops to blame it on. By the 1960, the problem had become so dire that a cleric responsible for the care of “erring” priests wrote to the Vatican suggesting that it acquire a Caribbean island to put them on.

What has made a bad situation worse, as the eminent QC Geoffrey Robertson argues in this coolly devastating inquiry, is canon law – the church’s own arcane, highly secretive legal system, which deals with alleged child abusers in a dismayingly mild manner rather than handing them over to the police. Its “penalties” for raping children include such draconian measures as warnings, rebukes, extra prayers, counselling and a few months on retreat. It is even possible to interpret canon law as claiming that a valid defence for paedophile offences is paedophilia. Since child abusers are supposedly incapable of controlling their sexual urges, this can be used in their defence. It is rather like pleading not guilty to stealing from Tesco’s on the grounds that one is a shoplifter. One blindingly simple reason for the huge amount of child abuse in the Catholic church (on one estimate, up to 9% of clerics are implicated) is that the perpetrators know they will almost certainly get away with it.

Teen’s suicide prompts schools to take on bullying

CADILLAC, Mich. (AP) – The parents of a Michigan teen who killed himself last year are taking on the topic of bullying in schools.

Tom and P.K. Harrison say a Michigan State Police investigation determined that their son Alex was harassed and ostracized before he died in February 2009.

Their story is resonating with students, especially when news of bullying-related suicide has become more common.

In one high-profile case in Massachusetts, several students have been charged in the death of a 15-year-old Irish girl.

The Harrisons have started a campaign called “See It. Hear It. Stop It.” It encourages students and teachers to report bullying.

Meanwhile, Michigan lawmakers are reconsidering a bill that would require schools to have anti-bullying policies.

Brazil priest detained after pedophilia accusation

| at 09:38 am

By TALES AZZONI,

Associated Press.

SAO PAULO (AP) – Police detained an 83-year-old Brazilian priest after a congressional hearing produced allegations he molested boys as young as 12 and a television station displayed a sex tape of him in bed with a 19-year-old.

The pedophilia allegations against Msgr. Luiz Marques Barbosa are the most lurid of several sexual scandals to hit the Brazilian church recently, largely because of the videotape that has been widely distributed over the Internet.

Sen. Magno Malta, the lawmaker leading the legislature’s sexual abuse probe, said that the detention late Sunday of Barbosa was a milestone in the fight against child abuse in Brazil. He said the investigation is not an attack on the church, but at suspected child molesters.

Judge Romulo Vasconcelos, who participated in the congressional probe, told Globo TV on Monday that he requested Barbosa’s immediate detention out of fear that the priest would flee the country. (more…)
