13 Reasons Why is a web television show based on the 2007 bestselling novel with the same name, written by Jay Asher, that follows the life of a group of teenagers after the death of a schoolmate who committed suicide because of bullying.

Before killing herself, the main character, Hannah Baker, struggles with many issues that teenagers must deal with during their passage through high school, such as bullying and sexual offences.

The show has had mainly positive reviews, and it has become one of the most successful shows brought by the internet-based company, Netflix. Schools all over the globe have already started asking their students to read the book as a way of understanding, from a different perspective, what it is like to feel victim of school-bullying.

The plot of the show centers in 13 tapes that Hannah Baker leaves to 13 schoolmates that made her take the decision of taking away her own life. In those tapes, there are 13 reasons and 13 causes of extreme depression and isolation. Clay Jensen, the lead male role on the series, has to figure out why Hannah Baker felt the way she did before ending her life.

The show leaves parents with an important reflection, listening and paying attention to what kids are doing and how they’re behaving, as it is important to keep an eye on even the most minimal things.

It is important to keep in mind that bullying and sexual abuse on children, aged 10 to 17, is one of the most common causes of suicide in the USA for children that age. So, having a programme that shows on their own language the causes and consequences of bullying is the perfect mirror to reflect how we are as a society.
