Child DeathWest Virginia State Police say they have taken a father and his girlfriend into custody after a child was found with head trauma and scars all over his body.

The father of a three-year-old child told a trooper that he called 911 after discovering that his child was not breathing. According to state police, James Mauldin told the trooper that the child was in his bedroom and collapsed.

When the trooper went to the hospital, however, he was told that the child had burn marks on his buttocks and both legs, say West Virginia State Police. The child has also suffered a fractured skull and “brain bleeds.”According to West Virginia State Police, the trooper asked the father’s girlfriend about the incident and she said that the father had abused the child a few days before and that the child had been burned and suffered head trauma.

The trooper then took James Mauldin into custody on charges of child abuse, child neglect and presentation of false information regarding child injuries.

The girlfriend, Jasmine Dawkins, was also taken into custody. She faces a child neglect charge and misdemeanor charge of presentation of false information regarding child injuries.

The child was later taken to Children’s National Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.
