PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (WPBF) – Many parents become frustrated when their children are causing a fuss in the car.
Some even threaten to stop the car if the arguing doesn’t cease.
A Florida mother says she was only trying to stop her children from fighting in the car when she hit her brakes.
Now, she is now facing felony child abuse charges.
“I thought, ‘Oh my God. You gotta be kidding me,” said Lorena Simpson.
Police say Lorena Simpson was driving with her 12-year-old daughter in the front seat, while her 9-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter were in the back.
When the younger children began arguing, she said she hit the brakes and turned around to tell them to stop.
When the car came to a sudden stop, officers say the 12-year-old hit the windshield.
The girl was not wearing her seat belt and her head left a crack in the windshield.
“I didn’t on purpose or intentionally harm my daughter, ” Simpson said.
Police say Simpson didn’t take her daughter to the doctor after she had a headache.
Simpson claims her daughter didn’t complain of a headache and didn’t realize anything was wrong.
“There was no bump, so I’m sorry, but I guess I did the wrong thing,” she said. “If she ever once complained to me and said, ‘Hey mom, I think I have a headache,’ or, she didn’t. I’m heartbroken. My kids are gone.”
The children are in the custody of their father.
