Elijah Wood is clearing up his comments from an interview in which he spoke out about child sex abuse in Hollywood.

“The Sunday Times interviewed me about my latest film but the story became about something else entirely,” Wood, 35, tweeted on Monday. “It prompted a number of false and misleading headlines. I had just seen a powerful documentary and I briefly spoke with the reporter about the subject which had consequences I did not intend or expect. Lesson learned.”

We’ve been ignoring an epidemic of child sex abuse in Britain

| May 20, 2016 at 06:43 am

England and Wales are preparing to deal with 30,000 new cases of child sexual abuse

At first sight, the figures are jaw-dropping: police in England and Wales are preparing to deal with 30,000 new cases of child sexual abuse. Reports are being passed to the police at a rate of 100 a month by the Goddard inquiry, which was set up after the exposure of Jimmy Savile. One senior officer told the Guardian he predicts that police will be investigating 200,000 cases across the country by 2020.

Some critics will regard these figures with scepticism, pointing to the botched inquiry into allegations of historical sexual abuse against a number of public figures, which has now been wound up. But the mishandling of that investigation does not mean we can ignore a mounting body of evidence that the scale of child sexual abuse is much greater than most people ever suspected.

Former Tory councillor admits having images of child sex abuse

| March 24, 2016 at 05:44 am

A shamed former Tory councillor was caught with images of child abuse after he stole a World War Two artefact from a museum.

Devious Neil Thorneywork, 61, stole a certificate – signed by Sir Winston Churchill – presented to pilot Albert Lowe of the Royal Observer Corps in 1943 for his bravery in the war.

The curator and former stock broker said he nicked the £500 piece after being sacked by the Broadway Tower Museum near Evesham, Worcestshire, and found himself struggling to pay his mortgage.

And when officers went to arrest Thorneywork at his home, they saw him mouth to his wife to get rid of “the USBs”.

Child Sexual Abuse Statistics

| January 13, 2016 at 02:35 pm

The prevalence of child sexual abuse is difficult to determine because it is often not reported; experts agree that the incidence is far greater than what is reported to authorities. CSA is also not uniformly defined, so statistics may vary. Statistics below represent some of the research done on child sexual abuse.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Children’s Bureau report Child Maltreatment 2010 found that 9.2% of victimized children were sexually assaulted (page 24).
