Montreal: Pedophile Gabriel Cantin to be sentenced Oct. 28

| at 06:36 am

MONTREAL – A judge is to decide next month whether a 72-year-old man should serve a lengthy prison term for his enormous collection of child pornography – uncovered in an investigation that also revealed he sexually abused a 3-year-old girl.

Prosecutor Rachelle Pitre argued at the Montreal courthouse Wednesday that an eight-year prison sentence is appropriate in Gabriel Cantin’s case, despite his age, because he still tries to minimize the impact of his crimes and refuses to address his apparent obsession with child pornography. Toronto: Why are children still at risk?

| September 20, 2011 at 01:32 pm

child When Kienan Hebert’s father condemned the criminal justice system for letting a known sex offender roam the streets, he was speaking for the children who were not as lucky as his son.

Paul Hebert was speaking for dead children, and abused children. And he was therefore speaking for us all. High-profile cases quickly come to mind.

When notorious Toronto pedophile Peter Whitmore’s reign of abuse came to its end in 2008 after the kidnapping and rape of two young boys in Saskatchewan (one from Manitoba), his lawyer, Daniel Brodsky, wrote Prime Minister Stephen Harper calling for a public inquiry into the lax tracking of high-risk offenders. Russian lawmakers to consider chemical castration bill for pedophiles

| July 12, 2011 at 11:40 am

Staatsbesuch Dmitri Medwedew - 62 President Dmitry Medvedev has submitted amendments to the State Duma, Russia’s lower house of parliament, introducing chemical castration for criminals guilty of sexual offences against children, a Duma official said on Tuesday.

The castration bill, designed to “increase the effectiveness of the prevention of the strikingly brutal crimes” against children, also introduces life sentence as a possible punishment for pedophiles who are repeat offenders.

The bill also stipulates voluntary medical treatment, including chemical castration, for other rapists.

Medvedev, who first proposed the introduction of chemical castration for pedophiles in May, said punishment for such criminals should be “as harsh as possible.” “A liberal approach here is totally unacceptable,” he said. (more…)

‘Horrific’ writings disclosed at hearing

| March 14, 2011 at 06:59 am

A Newmarket man should be labelled a dangerous offender because of the brutality associated with his crimes and an inability to control his sexual desire for children, prosecutors say.

Matthew Byers, convicted in 2007 of plotting to kidnap, rape and murder a child, is a moderate to high risk to re-offend, Crown prosecutor Nadine Courville told a Barrie courtroom Thursday.

Mr. Byers’ risk cannot be managed in the community, said Ms Courville, who is co-prosecuting the case with Marcy Henschel.

Mr. Byers was arrested in 2005 in a wooded area near Glen Cedar Public School in Newmarket. He was found with a backpack containing child pornography, condoms, duct tape and electrical wire.

Police later discovered writings at Mr. Byers’ home, graphically detailing plans to violently sexually assault, torture and murder an 11-year-old girl, identified in court records as the daughter of one of Mr. Byers’ female friends. (more…)

Canadian Mounted Police lead charge on child sexual exploitation

| March 3, 2011 at 07:35 am

Bangkok – Canadian police have launched a campaign with their Thai counterparts to use the internet to protect children from sexual exploitation in cyberspace, officials said Monday.

‘Our intention is to create a web of partners who can provide protection for children,’ said Suzanne Williams, director of the Canada-based Child Protection Partnership (CPP).

The group has been working with the Canadian Mounted Police and Interpol to crack down on child exploitation via the internet in Canada and abroad.

One of their notable successes was the arrest in 2007 of Canadian paedophile Christopher Paul Neil, dubbed Swirly Face for his digitally scrambled face in pornographic images he distributed on the internet.

Neil’s image was unswirled by computer experts from various police technical units around the world including the National Child Exploitation Coordination Center (NCECC) of the Canadian Mounted Police. (more…)

Child porn pervert snared in Stockport after transatlantic swoop

| March 2, 2011 at 07:50 am

A pervert who downloaded and created child porn pictures on his computer was caught after a police investigation which started thousands of miles away across the Atlantic. Mike Czyzewoski, 37, was snared when efforts to crack a porn ring in Canada and the United States revealed links to the UK, and finally led to a raid on his Stockport home.

When his computer was analysed, police found more than 30 images and pictures stored. Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court heard.

Many were classed as extreme pornography, and 11 were indecent photographs of young children.

Czyzewoski was allowed to walk free from court but given a three year community order and ordered to attend a sex offenders’ programme.

Judge Timothy Mort told him: “It is an artificial thought to consider you were not personally involved. Somewhere a child was being subjected to a situation in which they were required to involve themselves in sexual behaviour – something that will scar them for life.” (more…)

Tories to introduce new child pornography laws

| November 24, 2009 at 08:28 am

The Conservatives plan to introduce a new bill that would compel Internet service providers (ISPs) to report child pornography to the police, CTV News has learned.

The proposed legislation would require ISPs to report to a designated agency on tips they receive about websites where child pornography is available. They would also have to notify the police if the ISP believes a child porn offence has been committed using their Internet service.

Similar legislation is already in place in the United States.

Child rights advocates have long lobbied for the measure. Canada is the world’s second largest home to online child pornography and the second-largest online seller of child pornography material, such as images, videos or memberships.

According to the Canadian Centre for Child protection, about half of all child pornography images feature children under the age of eight and nearly a third of those images feature serious sexual assaults. (more…)
