Plans for child abuse reporting queried

THE AUTHOR of a major review of child protection in the UK has warned that plans to introduce mandatory reporting of suspected child abuse or neglect in Ireland could end up doing more harm than good.

Under the Children First Bill published last month, professionals or organisations that work with children will have a legal obligation to report suspicions or allegations of abuse to social services.

Failure to do so could result in a fine or jail term of up to five years. (more…)

MANILA, Philippines – Jonathan Ramos, a 19-year-old college exchange student in South Korea, has vivid memories of his terror teacher in grade school.

A Public Administration student at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, he recalls how as a Grade 3 pupil he and his classmates were subjected to their teacher’s verbal abuse. “Every day she cursed us. That’s how I learned to curse. Good thing, I don’t do that anymore.” (more…)

Taking a shot at donating CAP raises money to serve child victims

The 7th Annual Shoot Trap for CAP fundraiser will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at the Rocky Mountain Gun Club. Shooters from every level, including national competitors, will shoot trap in order to raise money for Casper children.

The kick-off party, “CAP Cabernet & Calcutta,” will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Wolcott Galleria. During a happy hour event, guests can enjoy hors d’oeuvres while taking part in a live or silent auction. There will also be a calcutta, where people can wager on their favorite teams.

Business executives are being urged to take help reduce child poverty

Business New Zealand and the Every Child Counts group will meet at Te Papa on Thursday to discuss the role of business in supporting better outcomes for children.

Reports commissioned by the group calculate child maltreatment costs the nation at least $2 billion per year and poor child outcomes associated with poverty cost at least $6 billion per year, or 3% of GDP. (more…)

Invest in Keeping Our Children Safe

Thank you for bringing attention to the painful problem of child abuse and neglect during Child Abuse Prevention Month. Though the proclaimed month ended a few days ago, recent horrific stories of child abuse should wake us up to the ongoing need to prevent child abuse.

Our criminal justice leaders get it. I applaud the 12 chiefs of police, sheriffs and district attorneys from around New Mexico who signed a letter to Congress on behalf of Fight Crime Invest in Kids to support funding for voluntary home visiting to help prevent child maltreatment, cut crime and save taxpayers money. I have taken a personal pledge to do what I can to prevent more children from experiencing this life-changing trauma. (more…)

Cardinal in child abuse conspiracy urged to quit

DUBLIN: The Irish Catholic primate, Sean Brady, is under intense pressure to stand down over a child abuse row after further calls for his resignation were made by Ireland’s Foreign Minister and the editor of the influential newspaper The Irish Catholic.

Cardinal Brady is resisting demands that he step down after revelations on television this week that he failed to inform parents and police about a list of children who were being sexually abused by one of Ireland’s most notorious paedophile priests. (more…)

Maid jailed four years for abusing employer’s child

KUANTAN: An Indonesian maid was jailed four years by the Sessions Court here after she pleaded guilty to abusing her employer’s 11-year-old disabled son last March.

Nanis Supardi, 40, a mother of four from Jember, East Java, had stomped on the boy’s face, neck, abdomen and chest besides covering his face with a cloth and forcing water down his throat between 6pm and 6.30pm on March 13. (more…)

Tewksbury Township child-abuse investigation turns up $100,000 marijuana crop, authorities say

Child maltreatmentA Tewksbury Township woman faces allegations she was growing 34 indoor marijuana plants valued at more than $100,000, the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office says.

Elizabeth Marquez, 41, drew the attention of authorities when the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services received an anonymous tip Tuesday about possible child abuse at her home, Prosecutor Anthony Kearns III says in a news release. The prosecutor’s office and Tewksbury Township police responded to assist DYFS as part of standard operating procedure, Kearns says. (more…)

Children Services director says agency received call in child abuse case in 2010

Child abuseLucas County Children Services received at least one prior phone call “expressing concern” about the well-being of two adopted children in the care of Joshua and Courtney Waxler.

“I’m not sure what, if anything, we did with that,” said Dean Sparks, executive director of Children Services.

The Waxlers, both 24, are each facing one count of child endangering and are being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond each. (more…)
