Silence over child abuse can now mean jail

Anyone who remains silent when they know a child is being abused can now be jailed for up to 10 years

A new law is in force making it an offence for anyone to remain silent when they know a child has been assaulted.

Justice Minister Judith Collins says it’s no longer acceptable for a family member, or anyone else, to claim they weren’t involved in the abuse of a child when they knew the child was at risk. (more…)

Mom charged with 2nd degree child abuse after girl, 6, dies

The mother of a 6-year-old girl who court records say had burns, cuts, bruises and possible broken arms has been charged with second-degree child abuse following the child’s death at a Flint-area hospital.

The Genesee County prosecutor’s office says 31-year-old April Foster of Detroit was arraigned Sunday on the charge, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison. (more…)

Police: Child abuse suspect claimed ‘I dropped her’

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) – A Las Vegas man charged in the death of his 3-month-old daughter told police he dropped the child on her head, according to an arrest report.

Justin Forsgren, 33, who also goes by the name Justin Villanova, was charged with murder by child abuse, and two counts of child abuse and neglect after his daughter, Rayea, died last Friday. (more…)

Records show alleged child abuse in RV Park rampage case

Child abuseFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) — Officials released documents on a family detailing alleged child abuse prior to the father going on a deadly rampage at a South Florida RV park.

According to records at the Department of Children and Families, the department investigated alleged abuse occurring at William DeJesus’ house dating back to 2007, but returned the children to the family. (more…)

Man charged with murder, child abuse of 1-year-old

Child abuseThe man considered the father a baby who died in 2010 has been charged with her murder as well as child abuse. Ka’Mia C. Strawder was 1 year old when she died at Shands at the University of Florida on Nov. 19, 2010.

Early Monday, the man listed on Ka’Mia’s birth certificate as her father, Christopher Jarvis Strawder, 24, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. In his report on the death, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Detective Charles Beveridge noted that Strawder is not the child’s biological child. (more…)

Man convicted of abuse in child’s death died from brain aneurysm

The man convicted of abuse in connection with a child’s death died just days after he was found guilty. The Cleveland County coroner said Dwight Justice died from a brain aneurysm.

Child abuse price tag for U.S. is $124 billion, CDC reports

The child abuse that takes place in one year in the United States will cost the nation $124 billion over the victims’ lifetimes, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The findings reveal the financial burden of child abuse is just as high or higher than that of costly health conditions, including Type 2 diabetes.

“No child should ever be the victim of abuse or neglect — nor do they have to be. The human and financial costs can be prevented through prevention of child maltreatment,” said Linda C. Degutis, director of CDC′s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. (more…)

Father pleads guilty to child abuse resulting in death

Child AbuseA former Monument man accused in the murder of his 7-year-old daughter pleaded guilty to a lesser count Monday, a week after a judge cited what he called “stunningly sloppy police work” on the case.

Slated to begin trial Monday, Hanif Sims took a last-minute plea to child abuse resulting in death, averting courtroom battles over a tape that proved Sims never made a confession that authorities said he did.

Sims, 31, faces 27 to 40 years in prison rather than the automatic life term he would have received with a murder conviction. (more…)

A Couple Charged For Child Abuse In Their Baby’s Co-Sleeping Death

child maltreatmentA Utah couple’s three-month-old was suffocated to death while sleeping in bed with his parents. It gets worse — this is the SECOND child to die in their bed! The doctors warned them not to co-sleep!

The Utah Court of Appeal upheld the child abuse charges against Trevor Merrill and Echo Nielsen after their son Kayson Merill died in 2006 from suffocating in their bed, according to The Daily Mail. Their 24-day-old daughter died the SAME exact way in 2006, but they obviously didn’t learn!
