Child abuse rates climb

Sad KidFigures in a national report show Tasmania has the highest rates of child abuse in the country, after the Northern Territory.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s report found Tasmania had the second highest rate of children on protection orders over the past five years.

The report’s statistics estimated that 100 children in every 1,000 needed protection over the survey period. (more…)

Cartoons, classics may be ‘child abuse’

SOME cartoons or even classical writings could be illegal under Northern Territory laws outlawing child abuse material, a magistrate says.

A 24-year-old man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, attended a bail hearing yesterday accused of possessing 466 images of child abuse, about 70 per cent of them Japanese animation.

Under the NT Criminal Code, any offensive material that “depicts, describes or represents” children engaged in sex, being subjected to torture or in a demeaning context is outlawed. (more…)

Russian authorities break up online community for pedophiles

Russian authorities have arrested two men on suspicion of running an online community for pedophiles, the Russian League of Internet Security announced on Wednesday. The website had more than 100 members.

The League said the owner and administrator of the website have been arrested, although no details were given about the time and place of the arrests. The website had roughly 130 members, most of them from Russia, although some were from Germany, France, Israel and former Soviet nations. (more…)

Pedophile sentenced in child porn case is brain damaged, lacks impulse control

child abuseTerrence Sundsmo sat noiselessly in a downtown Portland courtroom today, hands resting placidly on his pale blue jail scrubs, waiting for the chance to say his piece before a federal judge sentenced him to prison.

For about 45 minutes, the judge, lawyers and a neuropsychologist had talked about Sundsmo.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan W. Bounds made his pitch to the judge: Sundsmo, 41, pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography after previously raping a child, so he deserved 15 more years behind bars. (more…)

Anonymous publishes ‘pedophile list’

Anonymous en la operación GoyaThe Anonymous hacking group has posted a list of 1,500 people who it says used a child porn website.

The move comes after the group managed to take down more than 40 pedophile websites last week which were swapping images through the Tor anonymization network.

It all started when Anonymous came across a site hosted on a Tor darknet a couple of weeks ago that linked to images of child sex abuse. (more…)

US: Dutch pedophile convicted of child porn possession

Haarlem District Court sentenced Ad van den Berg Tuesday after prosecutors found thousands of photos and films depicting child pornography at his home.

Van den Berg claimed the images and films were for scientific research. (more…)

Britain’s ‘biggest collector of child porn’ jailed

Daniel TaylorLONDON — A paedophile described by police as Britain’s most prolific collector of child abuse images was jailed on Thursday after he was caught with more than 300,000 indecent pictures.

Father-of-two Daniel Taylor, 31, from Leeds, northern England, was handed an indeterminate jail term after pleading guilty to 27 charges, including making and possessing indecent images and sexually assaulting a baby.

None of the charges relate to his own children. (more…)

Australia: Man arrested in Polk child porn, aggravated abuse case

Christopher LobbanThe criminal case involving a Polk County corrections deputy charged with paddling naked children and sending the videos to a man in Australia, became an international affair over the weekend when the man was arrested, authorities said.

“This conduct is just frightening,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd in a news conference Monday afternoon, “really frightening.”

The arrest of Christopher Lobban, 53, is connected to the case of Robin Leigh Pagoria, a 45-year-old jailer arrested in May on charges of aggravated child abuse; production, promotion and possession of child pornography. Deputies said she videotaped the beatings of two nude girls. Deputies would only say the girls are between 12 and 16 years old. (more…)

Washington: accused pedophile allowed to watch sex-video evidence

PedophileBecause he is acting as his own lawyer and may see the evidence, an accused pedophile in Washington state is being allowed to watch child pornography, including videos of him allegedly having sex with young boys, according to news reports.

Weldon Marc Gilbert, a millionaire and former commercial pilot arrested in November 2007, has unlimited access to the 28 hours of footage on more than 100 DVDs seized by police, KOMO-TV reported. He is in the Pierce County Jail in Tacoma awaiting trial. But he won’t be alone while watching the evidence, KIRO-TV points out. An investigator will be in the room. (more…)

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Lying on his family room floor with assault weapons trained on him, shouts of “pedophile!” and “pornographer!” stinging like his fresh cuts and bruises, the Buffalo homeowner didn’t need long to figure out the reason for the early morning wake-up call from a swarm of federal agents.

That new wireless router. He’d gotten fed up trying to set a password. Someone must have used his Internet connection, he thought.

“We know who you are! You downloaded thousands of images at 11:30 last night,” the man’s lawyer, Barry Covert, recounted the agents saying. They referred to a screen name, “Doldrum.”

“No, I didn’t,” he insisted. “Somebody else could have but I didn’t do anything like that.”
