Sex trafficking a problem in Snohomish County

| May 6, 2011 at 09:21 pm

Experts Lisa Paul, deputy prosecuting attorney at the Dawson Place Child Advocacy Center, and Dusty Olson, an advocate of Providence’s Intervention Center for Assault and Abuse and co-founder of the Snohomish County Sexual Exploitation and Intervention Network, discuss the problem of sex trafficking of children in Snohomish County.

When many think of sex trafficking, they think of prostitutes in Southeast Asia, Nepal, Bangladesh or another faraway country – anywhere but here in the United States, and especially not of our own kids in our own communities.

But it is happening here. (more…)

| at 03:17 pm

Forest Grove police say a 19-year-old man accused of rape and sex abuse has been indicted on more sex crime charges.

Ashbaugh said the new charges stem from tips detectives investigated after police initially arrested Matthews in February on accusations that he raped a 16-year-old girl at a Forest Grove residence in September. Bizarre pornography raid underscores Wi-Fi privacy risks

| May 4, 2011 at 07:28 pm

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Lying on his family room floor with assault weapons trained on him, shouts of “pedophile!” and “pornographer!” stinging like his fresh cuts and bruises, the Buffalo homeowner didn’t need long to figure out the reason for the early morning wake-up call from a swarm of federal agents.

That new wireless router. He’d gotten fed up trying to set a password. Someone must have used his Internet connection, he thought.

“We know who you are! You downloaded thousands of images at 11:30 last night,” the man’s lawyer, Barry Covert, recounted the agents saying. They referred to a screen name, “Doldrum.”

“No, I didn’t,” he insisted. “Somebody else could have but I didn’t do anything like that.”

“You’re a creep … just admit it,” they said. (more…)

Convicted Arizona pedophile may be hiding in Calgary

| April 26, 2011 at 09:33 am

CALGARY - It’s impossible to imagine a more helpless victim, or a more sickening crime.

A teenage quadriplegic, brain-injured and confined to a wheelchair, repeatedly molested by his own perverted caregiver.

The disgusting deed was caught on surveillance video, and police in two countries are now trying to catch the creep convicted of the crime – a former Calgarian believed to be hiding in Canada.

“He’s wanted for several counts of sexual misconduct with a minor,” said Deputy Jason Ogan of the Pima County, Arizona Sheriff’s Department.

George Ross Wilcox vanished before a Pima County Superior Court could sentence him for the crime after he was found guilty of four counts of sexual conduct with a minor under 15.

It was June 9, 2009, when Wilcox fled Arizona and a seemingly certain jail sentence after the court found him guilty – in part based on the video which documented the pedophile attacks on the child.

So keen are police to catch and jail 53-year-old Wilcox, who was born and raised in Calgary, that the case was given top billing on America’s Most Wanted, a website and TV show dedicated to catching fugitive criminals.

“Before Wilcox was sentenced, he took off. He is a Canadian citizen and police believe he may have fled the states – hiding out in Calgary or Vancouver, Canada,” reads the Most Wanted description.

From a family with nine brothers and sisters, Wilcox still has strong family connections to Calgary, including his mother, father and many of his siblings. (more…)

Child sex offender from Bell gets up to 40 years in prison

| at 09:19 am

A convicted sex offender from Bell will serve 20 to 40 years in a state prison for charges related to sexual contact with four girls ages 15 to 17.

In a rambling statement in court yesterday, Shawn Michael Simms disputed the extent of the physical contact he had with some of the victims, but told Westmoreland County President Judge John Blahovec he’d follow through on his general plea to 22 charges because he felt it was in his best interest.

Simms, 22, pleaded guilty in September to involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors, possession of child pornography and sexual abuse of children by photographing or videotaping sex acts involving people younger than 18.

State police said Simms had sex at various locations with girls from Latrobe, Derry, Slickville and Blairsville. Two were 15 years old, and the other two were 17.

Assistant District Attorney Leo Ciaramitaro told Blahovec that Simms’ pursuit of juveniles for sex began a week after his September 2008 parole in another case for having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

“The defendant in this case, your honor, just doesn’t get it,” Ciaramitaro said. “He doesn’t understand the repercussions as a result of his actions.”

Herbert Hays, who reviewed the case for the Pennsylvania Sexually Violent Offenders Assessment Board, determined that Simms is a sexually violent offender, although Simms did not use force to make the girls have sex with him or ply them with alcohol.

Simms told Blahovec that he does not have an obsession with young girls, but the judge accepted the state board’s assessment and ordered him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

One of Simms’ victims, now 17, said yesterday that she suffered depression because of her physical relationship with Simms.

“I’m afraid after he gets out that I’m the first person that he’ll come to,” she testified.

Md. man arrested on child porn charges, could face 50 years

| April 25, 2011 at 08:53 am

The Maryland State Police Computer Crimes Unit arrested a Washington County, Md. man on the morning of April 22 in connection with the distribution and possession of child pornography. The accused is identified as Roger A. Repp III, 45, of the 600-block of Westwood Street, Hagerstown, Md.  He is charged with two counts each of distribution and possession of child pornography.  If convicted, Repp could be sentenced to up to 50 years in prison.

The Maryland State Police Computer Crimes Section began this investigation in March of this year after receiving information from a police detective in Canada.  The detective had located a computer on the Internet openly distributing child pornography.

A Maryland state trooper assigned to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force was assigned the investigation and was able to trace the computer back to Repp’s residence.  On April 22, State Police investigators executed a search warrant at Repp’s home and recovered evidence that led to the charges being filed.
