The Aarushi saga has us looking back at two similar tales of horror, where the very people who nurtured their child’s life came under the radar for brutally cutting it short.

Six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey's battered, strangled body was found in her house's basement on December 26, 1996.

The JonBenet Ramsey Story: Trial by media?

The JonBenet Ramsey story played out in a small town in Colorado, US in the winter of 1996. It was strongly believed that the parents were responsible for their six-year old daughter’s murder but there was absolutely no proof to back that charge. Fifteen years later, the trail is now icy cold.

Case history: Case history: Early December 26, 1996, Patsy Ramsey called 911 to report JonBenet, her six year-old daughter, missing from her bed. The Ramseys claimed there was a three-page ransom note downstairs demanding $118,000. Hours later, with the investigators in the home, JonBenet’s father, John B. Ramsey, found his little girl’s battered, strangled body in the their basement. John and Patsy insist an intruder killed their daughter.

The Ramseys at the press conference they held to clear their names in their daughter's death.

Ramseys vs Talwars: Just as how the first trimester of the Aarushi case panned out, the investigators in the Ramsey case bungled-up numerous times. There was no move to protect forensic evidence. They did not search the premises thoroughly enough, they did not even seal off the area- letting friends and associates walk in and out at their leisure.

Unlike the Talwars, it took a good while before the Ramseys were aware of the mounting suspicion against them. By that time, the media was going full throttle on their direct involement in their child’s death, sans proof.

When news stories appeared reporting that the police believed that JonBenet had been sexually assaulted prior to the time of her murder, John and Patsy Ramsey finally realized that the police, to use John’s words — “Weren’t there to help us, they were there to hang us.”

In May, the Ramseys held a press conference, part of which showed John Ramsey staring into the camera and declaring dramatically, “I did not kill my daughter.”

Mirroring the Talwar story, this was a desperate attempt by the Ramseys to declare their innocence, but there were no takers. During the time, a major American talk show even held a live ‘trial’ on the case where they were found liable for the death.

Current Status: United States of America has long since forgotten little JonBenet. With no concrete evidence or any suspect, the case gathered dust. A few years later, Pat Ramsey also succumbed to cancer.

Where the case stands fifteen years later can be summarised perfectly by the words of CNN reporter Tom Forman, who tracked the case from the little town of Boulder in Colorado in 1996:
“All we really know is what I said many times at the end of my reports back in that sad winter: A little girl was killed in her own home on Christmas. And no one has ever spent a day in jail for her death.”

Four-year-old Madeleine Mccann went missing from her room in Portugal in 2007 while her parents dined at nearby restaurant

The Madeleine McCann story: Gone without a trace

Case History: On May 3, 2007, Kate McCann discovered that her 4-year-old daughter Madeleine was missing from their room while on holiday in Portugal. The McCanns, who hailed rom England, were entertaining friends at a nearby restaurant and Kate had stopped by to check on her children who were asleep in their apartment. Portuguese investigators initally followed the abduction angle. Madeleine was suspected to have been kidnapped by a paedophile or a child trafficking ring. A local with a paedophilic record first confessed his role in her abduction but later, in a dramatic u-turn from his deathbed, denied the allegations.

Since the initial weeks of speculation, little in the way of hard and fast fact emerged, forcing the Portuguese police to close the case.

McCanns vs Talwars: After a year’s search, the Portuguese investigators found it difficult to carry on with the abduction angle and turned the heat on the McCanns- further questioning their role in the child’s disappearance. In fact, the McCanns continue to fight a legal battle against a former Portuguese detective over his allegations that Madeleine died in the rented apartment while her parents were out. He accused the McCanns of negligence.

The Portuguese police closed the investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance after exactly 18 months, citing lack of evidence. In contrast, the CBI have managed to hold the Talwars accountable, naming them the main accused in the case, despite weak evidence.

Current Status: The Portuguese police may have shut the investigation but the search for Madeleine continues on a different level. People the world have reported citings of the child, the most recent in Dubai in January 2011. The McCanns have even released images projecting the appearance of an older Madeleine.

In 2010, the McCanns signed a book deal to make some extra cash to fund their global campaign. They hope to shed light on their innocence through the book which is expected to hit the stands this April.

Like the Ramseys, the McCanns have so far not been chargesheeted by the investigators- a liberty the Talwars currently do not enjoy. They go to trial on February 28.

Newly released police documents reveal a catalogue of missed opportunities in the search for Madeleine McCann.

Caroline Gammel, WA Today, Australia.

Is there is no end to the despair suffered by Gerry and Kate McCann? Fifteen months after their three-year-old daughter Madeleine disappeared from their holiday apartment at the Ocean Club resort in the Portuguese village of Praia da Luz, she is yet to be found. So often their hopes have been raised only to be cruelly dashed. Their daughter has been “seen” at a petrol station in Morocco, in the Maltese capital, Valetta, at a restaurant in the Belgian town of Tongeren, and in Cartagena in the south of Spain. But despite a lengthy international police inquiry and global publicity, no clues to her possible whereabouts have been uncovered.

Now, newly released secret Portuguese police files have provided information that can only deepen their anguish and increase their frustration at what appears to be a series of missed opportunities and a catalogue of failings in the hunt for their missing daughter.

According to the files, British police were tipped off that Madeleine McCann had been snatched by members of an international pedophile ring who photographed her three days before she vanished. In an email sent by the Metropolitan Police, a child abduction ring based in Belgium placed an order for a “young girl”. Three-year-old Madeleine was spotted by someone connected with the gang who took her picture. The photograph was sent back to Belgium, where the pedophile ring agreed that she should be abducted. Three days later, on May 3 last year, Madeleine was abducted while her parents ate dinner at a restaurant near their apartment.

The revelation supports Kate and Gerry McCann’s long-held theory that their eldest child may have been taken by a child-smuggling ring and follows news earlier this week that a little girl seen in a shop in Amsterdam only days after Madeleine’s disappearance called herself Maddy and and told the Dutch shop assistant, Anna Stam, that “they took me from my holiday”. Stam, 41, later saw a picture of Madeleine and made the link because of her unusual eyes. She reported the sighting to the Dutch police who passed her details to detectives in Portugal, but no further action was taken.

The encounter was reported to the local Policia Judiciaria in June last year but not passed on to the McCanns. Their private investigators are looking into the lead. The email regarding the pedophile ring that was sent by an intelligence officer on the Met’s vice squad on March 4 this year to counterparts in the Portuguese and Leicestershire forces is a significant development in the case. Just last month, Portuguese police closed their investigation and cleared the McCanns, who live in the county of Leicestershire, of involvement in their daughter’s disappearance.

The files showed that Detective Constable John Hughes, from Leicestershire police, forwarded the email to the Policia Judiciaria at Portimao in the Algarve on April 21. The next day it was sent to Ricardo Paiva, one of the three Portuguese police officers leading the investigation.

On April 28, Portuguese police faxed the information to Interpol in Lisbon and asked them to investigate it as a matter of urgency. Interpol replied on May 23, passing on all information gathered from its bureaus in London, Brussels, Germany and Finland. On May 27, Interpol sent an urgent fax to Portuguese police asking for more information, but an undated return fax told them they had all the information that there was. The inquiry was shelved on July 21.

Belgium has already featured in the case. There was an alleged sighting of Madeleine last August in Tongeren but it was later ruled out. The country was at the centre of one of the most notorious pedophile investigations of recent years that saw Marc Dutroux jailed for life in 2004 after being convicted of kidnapping, raping and murdering young girls.

The files have also shown that Kate McCann wrote to Portuguese police begging for information about her daughter and calling for an end to hostility over the case. Mrs McCann, 40, contacted the head of the investigation, Paulo Rebelo, while she was still a suspect and said it was “torture” not knowing what was happening. She pleaded with him for a thaw in the frosty relationship between the couple and detectives in the Algarve, and the British police.

Appealing to Rebelo’s “heart” and his role as a father, she said she wanted an end to the infighting. “This shouldn’t be about ‘finger-pointing blame’ nor should it be about differences in culture,” she wrote. “It should be about a beautiful, innocent little girl who is still missing. “As her mother, the pain and anxiety I feel for her is indescribable and the feeling of helplessness overwhelming.”

Rebelo did not reply to the letter and has never met the couple, despite travelling to Britain in April to interview friends who dined with them on the night Madeleine disappeared. The police files have also revealed that the Policia Judiciaria was also criticised by Portugal’s own public prosecutors, who accused detectives of failing to uncover any credible evidence about the three-year-old’s fate.

The extent of the police failings was laid bare in files that showed officers refused to divulge key information to the family and public, including: detailed e-fits that they were given three days after the Madeleine disappeared and were not released until the case closed.

-circuit TV images of a young girl seen at several petrol stations in Portugal shortly after Madeleine vanished. Kate and Gerry McCann were shown just one CCTV picture during the 15-month investigation.

Yesterday the McCann’s spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said the couple had been frustrated beyond words at the lack of co-operation from the Portuguese police.

“The worst thing is that all this time Madeleine has been let down by this lack of apparent co-ordination,” he said.

As the McCann’s Portuguese lawyers continued to trawl through the enormous police files, they said they were considering asking for the case to be re-opened. The search for Madeleine McCann goes on.

According to an email sent by the Metropolitan Police a child abduction ring based in Belgium placed an order for a “young girl”.

Three-year-old Madeleine was spotted while on holiday in Portugal by someone connected to the gang who took a picture of her.

The photograph was sent back to Belgium where the paedophile ring agreed that she should be abducted, the email states.

Three days later on May 3rd last year Madeleine was taken from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in the Algarve while her parents ate at a nearby restaurant.

The astonishing revelation supports Kate and Gerry McCann’s long-held theory that their eldest child may have been taken by a child smuggling ring.

The email, sent by an intelligence officer on the Met’s vice squad on March 4 this year to counterparts in the Portuguese and Leicestershire police, marks a significant development in the case of the missing girl.

Just last month Portuguese police closed their investigation and cleared the McCanns of any involvement in their daughter’s disappearance.

The email was revealed for the first time in police files made public this week.

The Met Police were tipped by an anonymous source, the files showed.

Met officer John Shord wrote the email to Leicestershire Police on March 4 which was passed on to Operation Task – the British end of the investigation into Madeleine McCann.

It said: “Intelligence suggests that a paedophile ring in Belgium made an order for a young girl three days before Madeleine McCann was taken.

“Somebody connected to this group saw Maddie, took a photograph of her and sent it to Belgium. The purchaser agreed that the girl was suitable and Maddie was taken.”

DC John Hughes, from Leicestershire Police, forwarded the email to the Policia Judiciaria (PJ) at Portimao in the Algarve on April 21, the files showed.

The next day the email was sent to Ricardo Paiva, one of the three Portuguese police officers leading the investigation.

On April 28, Portuguese police faxed the information to Interpol in Lisbon and asked them to investigate it as a matter of urgency.

Interpol replied on May 23, passing on all information gathered from its bureaus in London, Brussels, Germay and Finland.

On May 27, Interpol in Lisbon sent an urgent fax to Portuguese police asking for more information, but an undated return fax told them they had all the information that there was.

The email emerged in volume 14, appendix five, of the vast Portuguese police dossier into the closed investigation which was released to the public on Monday.

Paulo Rebelo, the head of the police investigation into Madeleine, ordered that the information be placed in the case file.

The inquiry was then shelved on July 21, less than two months after Interpol was told there was no further information about the paedophile ring.

Belgium has featured in the case already. There was an alleged sighting last August in Tongeren on the Dutch Belgian border but it was later ruled out.

The country was at the centre of one of the most notorious paedophile investigations of recent years which saw Marc Dutroux jailed for life in 2004 after being convicted of kidnapping, raping and murdering young girls.

He was found guilty of kidnapping and raping six girls, killing two of them and causing the deaths of two others. The case surrounding Dutroux, 47, an unemployed electrician and a convicted paedophile, shocked Europe in the mid-1990s.

Mr and Mrs McCann, from Rothley in Leicestershire, have spent the last 15 months trying to find their daughter who disappeared from her family’s apartment in Praia da Luz last May.

For 10 months the couple had to battle to clear their own names of suspicion after they were named as suspects.

Only now, is a picture emerging of what may have happened.

It destroys the PJ’s theory that the couple accidentally killed Madeleine and then tried to dispose of her body.

The couple’s spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “Their private investigators will be pursuing this line as an absolute priority to establish if it has been fully investigated and properly ruled out.

“They have got some of the information already from their lawyers and investigators and they are waiting to hear from them what is legitimate, what is promising and what is not.

“They are frustrated by the delays and the mistakes that were made. They have learned an awful lot about this kind of thing and God forbid she has fallen foul of any of these types.”

A friend of Mr and Mrs McCann added: “Trafficking into Belgium forms a very strong part of their investigation as does trafficking into north Africa.

“There is definitive hard evidence that this is very much alive and happening and they have looked into the fact that someone was targeting children and they may well have been stealing to order.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Unsubstantiated information was received by CO14 relating to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

“This was passed on to Leicestershire Police on 4th March 2008. The information was further discussed with Leicestershire Police verbally and all possible lines of enquiry were conducted.

“Leicestershire Police passed the information on to the Portuguese authorities.”
