Spain arrests 26 in kiddie-porn bust

Valencia, Spain, Feb 9 (EFE).- Spanish police have arrested 26 people and implicated 10 more in a new operation against the possession and distribution of child pornography on the Internet.

Rolled out in 18 provinces over four months, the operation managed to intercept thousands of kiddie-porn files and seize 10 computers, 78 hard drives, a memory pen and 673 CDs and DVDs with pedophilic content, police said.

Last May a citizen in the eastern town of Torrent told police about the existence of some files with child-pornography content on the Internet, and from that moment agents concentrated on locating people who could be sharing those files.

The agents found several users who were making available to other people an index with different names that made a “clear reference” to kiddie-porn content, and so were able to locate all the users across several Spanish provinces.

METRO REPORTER – 22nd December, 2009

A paedophile who targeted an 11-year-old on Facebook and was caught when the child’s parents posed as her online, was today beginning a jail sentence.

Thomas Gibbs was snared after the couple logged on as their daughter and discovered he was grooming her for sex.

The 52-year-old was yesterday handed a 16-month prison term by a judge at Oxford Crown Court.

Prosecutors said the family took matters into their own hands when they noticed their daughter was communicating with a stranger online.

Looking over her shoulder as she used her laptop, their suspicions were confirmed and they realised the mystery correspondent was posting “extremely concerning” messages.

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) — A suspected pedophile surrendered to police after German law enforcement published clips from videos of child pornography allegedly showing the man.

The German Federal Criminal Investigations Office also posted several photos and audio samples of the man’s voice as they reached out to the public for clues leading to his arrest.

Along with the videos, the agency also posted screen grabs from the videos showing the details of the apartment where the films were shot.

The suspect turned himself in but refused to give any further details of his identity, investigators said in a news release.

Police said they found about 42 videos in which the suspected pedophile abused children, believed to be between the ages of 5 and 7 at the time.

Police think the videos were filmed in 2006 and that the victims would now be between 8 and 10 years old. The Investigator’s Office said the man used violence against the children in some of the clips.

The German Federal Criminal Investigations Office has been using technology to combat child pornography for several years.

In 2008 the agency unscrambled photos of suspected Canadian pedophile Christopher Paul Neil which later led to his arrest in Thailand

‘Pedophile-free zone’ laws may have to go

Laws that were passed locally that restrict where convicted sex offenders may live may soon be coming off the books.

In a case involving two southern New Jersey towns that attempted to restrict where convicted sex offenders may live, the Appellate Division of New Jersey Superior Court recently struck down a municipality’s right to enact those type of regulations. The case involved the municipalities of Galloway Township and Cherry Hill.

The challenge to the municipal laws was brought by individuals who were impacted by the restrictions. The judges rejected those towns’ laws that prohibited convicted sex offenders from living within 2,500 feet of any school, park, playground or day care center.

The three-judge panel found that New Jersey’s Megan’s Law was “pervasive and comprehensive” and should be the only law that dictates sex offender registration, notification, reintegration and rehabilitation. The Manalapan Township Committee is scheduled to open a discussion at its next meeting about whether Manalapan needs to rescind an ordinance adopted in 2005 that restricts where convicted sex offenders may live in the community and the amount of time they may “loiter” in one place.
