Citadel cadet arrested on child porn charges

| May 3, 2011 at 08:37 pm

A 21-year-old Citadel cadet was arrested Monday on child pornography charges, authorities said.

Joshua Heyward Hughes Rumph, of Knollwood Drive, Clemson, is charged with one count of third-degree criminal exploitation of a minor. He was being held in the Cannon Detention Center.

The Charleston Police Department was called to The Citadel in February after workers in the school’s information technology department discovered inappropriate images in a folder on a cadet’s computer, according to a police incident report. Police took custody of the computer and began a forensic examination. The arrest warrant accuses him of “knowingly possessing material that contains a visual representation of minors engaged in sexual activity.”

At a bond hearing today, Charleston County Magistrate Linda S. Lombard set bail at $50,000.

Rumph’s parents were present during the hearing. Rumph’s attorney, Timothy Kulp told Lombard that his client’s parents were hoping he would be able to return with them to their home in Clemson.

As a condition of his release, Rumph is prohibited from using a computer or any other device to access the Internet and is prohibited from contact with anyone under the age of 18.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Because of incorrect information provided to The Post and Courier, previous versions of this story incorrectly stated the charge against Rumph.

Utah authorities arrest dozens in child-porn investigation

| April 28, 2011 at 06:47 pm

After 114 sex crime investigations, 124 computer seizures, more than 36 million images, thousands of overtime hours and 39 arrests, Utah’s Internet crime investigators on Thursday offered a flat proclamation for their month-long, statewide child-pornography bust.

“It’s a pin prick,” said Cache County detective Vicky Carver. “In everything that’s out there, this is a drop in the bucket.”

But in last month’s investigation, small drops yielded big arrests: A Pleasant Grove man was released from prison in November after serving 15 years for multiple rapes; in March, investigators found child pornography on four computers, three cell phones, four external hard drives and 10 thumb drives at his home. A Salt Lake County man, in a previous conviction for possessing child pornography, served two days in jail and six months home confinement; in March, he was charged with 20 new felony counts. | April 27, 2011 at 06:35 pm

King County Superior Court Judge Beth Andrus had just handed down a 20-year prison sentence Thursday for convicted pimp Anthony “Mack” Terry when the courtroom phone rang.

On the line was the teenage victim Terry had pimped out and later asked to lie for him in a series of recorded phone calls he made from inside the King County Jail.

“I just want to say I was never a victim, and Anthony Terry was never my pimp,” said the woman, whose call was put on speaker phone. She is now 18 but was 17 when Terry was twice arrested for pimping her out.

Andrus had already heard the woman’s denials during Terry’s bench trial and proceeded unfazed with the hearing, telling Terry that when he is released from prison he is banned from areas of prostitution and will be required to register as a sex offender. (more…)
