An Oroville registered sex offender pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to receipt and distribution of child pornography.
Donald Wayne Johnson, 46, faces no less than 15 years and up to 40 in prison, according to the Department of Justice.
On Nov. 11, a repairman fixing Johnson’s printer called Butte County Sheriff’s deputies after he found animated images of child pornography on the printer, according to court documents.
During a search Johnson’s home, officers found two computers and multiple thumb drives, memory cards, and CDs that contained more than 3,000 images and videos depictions of minors engaged in sexual conduct, according to court documents.
Johnson was convicted in 1991 in Sacramento County of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor under the age of 14 and since had to registered as a sex offender.
The Sacramento Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force conducted the investigation. The task force includes agents from federal, state, and local agencies. The group investigates online child exploitation crimes, including child pornography, enticement, and sex trafficking. Assistant United States Attorney Kyle Reardon prosecuted the case.
The Department of Justice filed the case as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

United States District Judge John A. Mendez on June 7. Along with prison, he faces a lifetime term of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.
